n the bank of the Black Warrior
River, a baby blue and pale pink
sign hangs on the wall above
nearly 20 long, stark white boats in the
boathouse. “Launching a new story:
Baby Lewis,” the sign reads, referring to
the new Alabama Rowing head coach,
Kumari Lewis, who just arrived at The
University of Alabama in June 2025.
Her year has been full of big changes,
from her first pregnancy to a new head
coach position in the SEC and a 1,000mile move across the country. Lewis was
hired from the University of Pennsylvania
after coaching there for eight years.
She also rowed in college at Bucknell
University and was a first-team AllPatriot League rower.
